Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris first met at UCLA university, Los Angeles in 1980. Their first work was the music video 'The Perfect Kiss' by New Order. In 1990 they won the Grammy for Janet Jacksons 'Rhythm Nation 1814' and in 1999 for Korn 'Freak On A Leash'. This one also won an MTV Award the same year. Their breakthrough work was 1996 music video 'Tonight Tonight' by Smashing Pumpkins which won the MTV Award in six categories. One of their most interesting works is the 1999 music video 'Californication' for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, they also did the video 'Otherside' for them.

In 2006 they directed the movie 'Little Miss Sunshine'.

They are co-founders of Bob Industries.
