Progosk...regarding your post on Kevathens talk page: Can you put a link to an example of how you think the link structure should be? Is it worth adding a template or guideline for suggested layout / structure? By compound links, do you mean links that require two clicks instead of one? - Benroll 26 Jan 06 12:57 (EST) 17:57 (GMT)
benr: all i meant: no point making compound links, such as Videos:Genres:Furries, since it's not like a directory tree, there's no "physical" relation between wiki pages. so i'd say let's do discreet links (every page stands on its own) - as long as you manage to give pages names that don't risk ambiguity (or that might be needed by pages that fall under a completely different category). currently the only culprits for ambiguity might be "agencies" (actors'? ad? there are all kinds of agencies...) and "software"; but until a need for disambiguation arises, i'm for letting them be. people will derive a lot of sense from the link "structure" they see in the "directory" box on the right on the main page - as long as things are clear there, it's unlikely people will get confused...
on 2 clicks vs 1: i think it's always a good idea to make content readily available rather than hidden behind too many clicks. wherever possible i'd avoid useless summary pages. one of the things i'm trying to figure out is how best to make everything inter-navigable, so as not to have to return to the main page all the time (no solid ideas yet...)
as regards style templates... i'm pretty wary of controlling too much. obviously some guidance in these early steps just helps avoid too much reworking - but i think more and more people will be guided by the entries they find, so the idea of style templates strikes me as kind of anal, and un-wiki.
Yeah...agreed. Guidance not templates. I guess the internavigable thing doesn't happen until there's enough content there to internavigate. - Benroll 26 Jan 18:28 (GMT)
Still having problems with server sluggishness? (Host said their personal MySQL is working just fine, I'll be calling them again.) - Kevathens 11:22, 27 January 2006 (EST)
