Videoville talk:About

From Videoville

Hi everyone, I think thant Mr Glazer is one of the best video directors ever!!!!

Great!

site improvements

I wish we could combine the MediaWiki and Mvdbase software, for many reasons. This is what I can think of at the moment:

1- What this software lacks is the ability to add videos and have them instantly update in various databases site-wide. (i.e. add Daft Punk vids and they show up in Videos A-Z (by band), the directors' pages, and, even further, the pages of their cinematographers, commissioners, labels, etc etc). This Mvdbase does with ease, while it's very cumbersome here.
2- Mvdbase isn't a wiki. Videoville is, and because of that is easily linked from WikiPedia. This is quite useful since what we're building here is a kind of specialized, massive mv encyclopedia.
3- Mvdbase's visual form is a bit archaic. While Alex built that from scratch (props due), MediaWiki was built by many people who know much more than Alex or I about how to create a nice-looking site.
4- There are many, many advantages to the eventual smashing together of both of our sites. Limiting redundancy is a main concern. Also, mvdbase already has a ton of info on it, and why repeat what's already on the net?

it'd be a shame to leave this as wishful thinking.
1. part of the problem is of course treating a wiki as though it were a database, something it's definitely not designed for. generally wikis are very textual, made for writing into (and then also linking) and not so much as cross-referenced data-storage. in part, there's just not a whole lot of writing going on so far. i guess some of the inputting awkwardness could be overcome by a kind of general input sheet - though i have no idea whether wikis get those...
2. the other nice thing about wikiness is that anyone can add not just content, but also categorisations (or "fields" in database speak) at anytime along the way. as far as i can tell, in a proper database that could never be allowed.
4. i agree that it makes sense concentrate on stuff here that just doesn't have a place over there, and to forget a little bit about "completeness" of information (since that would, at best, be massively redundant with mvdbase.
