How to Find Deep Links

  • GAMV-PHP finds AOL videos
  • VideoBot finds AOL and Yahoo videos
  • This page offers a few software snoopers
  • View page source
  • Smart guess

Mac

players

  • Perian Quicktime plugin that plays all nearly all formats in Quicktime Player and QT compatible apps, indispensable.
  • vlc is another indispensable tool for viewing many video formats that Quicktime Player might not handle. In addition, in some cases vlc manages to save media streams to your hard disk.
  • the osx flv player par excellence: FLVLauncher. just. works.
  • J-VHS FLV Player is rather plain but sometimes works ok; it's also available for mac os classic.
  • SWF & FLV Player for Mac OSX. Free.

converters

  • iSquint converts most anything, including flv's (though not flash8 flv's) to ipod compatible formats, for free.
  • VisualHub, the pro app from the iSquint folks, does more, for a few bucks.
  • Snapz Pro X, a shareware screen recorder for Macintosh. Can save anything you can see or hear on your desktop to Quicktime files.

rss & podcasts

  • iTunes handles podcasts in a fairly complete way. add a video podcast via the advanced>subscribe pane, by adding the rss link of your choice (see here for some interesting feeds).
  • FireAnt is an interesting alternative, principally for its real, windows media and flash support, as well as its bittorrent component under the hood. there are still some kinks in the Mac version, but they're working hard and fast on it.
  • Democracy (formerly known as DTV) looks highly qualified to dethrone iTunes as the best dedicated video podcast client. Free, open-source, developed by the rather funky/geeky Participatory Culture Foundation, Democracy is now available for Mac, PC and Linux. Integration with their recently launched site videobomb is also on the cards.

PC

players

  • Media Player Classic is a simple, lightweight application that plays almost any media file.
  • VLC is a versatile media player that allows you to play/transcode/stream lots of media types (including DVD's). It also allows you to take a screen shot where Windows Media and others won't.

converters

  • SUPER © looks impressive - and it's free.
  • VIDEOzilla looks like the first to claim Flash 8 conversion capability.

  • I'M Instant Media is a newcomer to the internet tv arena; essentially it's a closed-source, windows media based rss aggregator, available as a free download for pc's only. interestingly the antcast seems to be included in their default channels list.
